I recently got back from a trip to Michigan to visit some friends from our old neighborhood. We lived across the street from each other, shared many a pours and just became good friends. Whiskey will do that. So, up to Holland Michigan we go for an extended weekend.
Now, to be fair, one of my favorite distilleries is in Holland Michigan. New Holland Brewery and Distillery. I've written about their Beer Barrel Bourbon before. Visiting my friends, who happen to live in the same town gives me the chance to stock up on some favorite whiskey. Which I did.
But....I also took the liberty to hit a couple of stores and pick up some whiskey that I didn't have. So, while I'm always on the look out for that elusive really hard to find bottle of the highly allocated big bourbon stuff, I still gravitate to the craft whiskey.
When it was all said and done, I ended up with about 20 bottles of new whiskey. And after showing them to the Big Human (Friend of the show), he said to me..."you really do have a type". To which I replied, "whaddya mean?" He said "look at what you bought. They are all craft whiskies." The only bottle that borders on big bourbon was the Bardstown Bourbon Company Fusion Series, Batch #9.
Yep, I guess I do have a type. I've said it before but craft whiskey just pulls me in.
For some people the thrill of the hunt of the highly allocated big bourbon is the thing. For me, it's the thrill of finding a craft whiskey that knocks my socks off. It's finding that diamond in the rough.
A couple of the bottles I picked up, were sitting on the shelf, covered in dust. I had to wipe the dust off the bottle. Love it! Maybe it's not worth the price I paid. Maybe it's just average whiskey. But maybe...just maybe, it's great! I can't wait to crack it open
Yes, I spent too much. Yes, I didn't need to buy as many bottles as I did. My wife let me indulge. She knows what I look for and will often pick up a bottle, bring it to me and ask, "have you ever heard of this? if not, you should buy it." She's a wonderful lady.
So now the challenge is where do I start. Choices, choices, choices.
